How to read Guitar Tabs ( Essential Techniques)


Now, lets move on to see more signs or symbols that are used in Guitar Tabs and are very essential techniques related with Guiter Playing. The way Guitar player perform these technoques decide the style of Guitarist and distinguish each Guitarists from other.

Vibratos ( v or ~)
vibtaros is indicated with symbols like v  or  ~ . To play vibrato you need to hit any note, here in this case you can hit the 5th fret of 1st string and try to bend the string up and down constantly, producing a sound similar to vibrating sound.
Ex.
e|-------5vvvvvv--------- or e|-------5~~~~~----- or 1st string
Number of vvvvv or ~~~~~ indicate the time span for how long you need to do the Vibratos.


Hammer-ons (h)
Hammer-on are indicated with word "h".
To play hammer-on, first you need press and note, then hit it. After hitting the note press down other note without picking the string.
For example: Take the 1st string. Press 3rd fret of 1st string with you index finger, now pick the string. while holding on the same note press down the 5th fret of same string with yourring figer. Don't forget to hit with little power.
e|-------3h5----------- While pressing down on the 3th fret, hammer on the 5th fret.


Pull-offs (p)
Pull-offs are indicated with word "p".
To do pull-offs, you just need to do oppostie of what you did in hammer-on.
For Exaample: Take the 1st string. While holding 5th fret of the string with your ring finger and 3rd fret with your index finger, hit the note. After hitting the note at 5th fret,  release the hold to 3rd fret at your index finger.

Hammer-ons/Pull-offs (h p)
Hammer-ons/Pull-offs are indicated with both "h p"
To do Hammer-ons/Pull-offs, you need to do both technique Hammer-ons and Pull offs in sequence manner.
h p = means hammer-on the note then pull-off.
For Example: Take a first string. Press the 3rd fret with you index finger and do Hammer-on to 5th fret, with your ring finger. After, completing hammer-ons do the Pull-off by releasing the note from 5th fret to 3rd.

Slides
Slides are represented with \ , /  or s.
\ symbol means slidding up towards the keys or slide to lower notes.
/ symbol means slidding down towards your picking hand or to a higher notes.
Whereas "s" represents up and down slides.
For Example: Take the 1st string. Press down the 3rd fret and pick it. After picking the note at 3rd fret, while holding on it slide it to 9th fret and stop on note at 9th fret.

e|---------9\3---------- Just follow the exact opposite process of above step.

e|------------5s--------- This means to pick the note at 5th fret of 1st string and while holding on the same note you should slide either up or down.


Bends ( b, ^ or () )
There are various symbols that indicates Bending. From the word bend, we can make out it is something related with bending process.
Here, In Guitar Tabs Bends are indicated with b, ^ or (). Bending is yet another essentail and impressive technique.
To do bends first you need to pick a note, then bend the same note of a fret to produce another or higher notes.
For Example: Pick a note at 5th fret of 1st string and while holding on the same fret, try to bend the string until it sounds like 7th fret.
